KUALA LUMPUR: PETRONAS has unveiled its first private 5G network in Malaysia, aimed at optimizing internal operations. The network is currently in use at the PETRONAS Regasification Terminal Sungai Udang (RGTSU) in Melaka. At the launch event on Friday (Oct 6), Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof emphasized the significance of this collaboration between the government, private sector, and academia. He praised the fast connectivity, low latency, and immense data handling capabilities of 5G, stating that these features empower industries to innovate, compete, and succeed globally.
Datuk Bacho Pilong, PETRONAS project delivery and technology vice-president, highlighted that the deployment of the 5G private network at RGTSU has enhanced operational efficiency, safety, and business sustainability. By combining 5G with the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and automation, PETRONAS aims to lead the energy industry and meet the demands of supplying safe, reliable, cost-optimized, and emission-abated energy solutions both domestically and internationally.
As of September, Malaysia’s commercial 5G network coverage in populated areas has reached 70.2%, with 2.49 million 5G subscriptions, equivalent to a 7.4% penetration rate. This progress indicates that the country is on track to achieve 80% 5G network coverage in populated areas by the end of the year. Additionally, Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil was also present at the launch event.
