Former Kota Anggerik assemblyman Najwan Halimi has issued an apology for making a racial slur against Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM). In a Twitter post on Friday night, Najwan took full responsibility for his statement and admitted to having a narrow perception of PSM, a political party that has actively advocated for the rights of the Indian community. He expressed his regret and promised to be more careful with his words in the future, emphasizing that such incidents will not be repeated.
The controversy arose after a screenshot of Najwan’s message started circulating on social media. In the screenshot, he had shared a news report about PSM’s candidate, Sivaranjani Manickam, on a WhatsApp group, commenting that the party was an “Indian estate party.” PSM’s secretary-general, Sivarajan Arumugam, called out Najwan on Twitter and made the screenshot public.
Following his apology on social media, Najwan also reached out to Sivarajan personally to express his remorse. He clarified that he does not hold any racist views or prejudices towards any race, including Indians. As a leader, Najwan stressed his commitment to upholding the welfare of the people and maintaining a fair and friendly approach to all members of society, regardless of their creed and faith.
