MELAKA: The Melaka River & Beach Development Corporation (PPSPM) is planning to develop a floating market on Sungai Melaka next year. This project will be a pioneer for the corporation.

Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman, the State Tourism, Heritage, Arts and Culture Committee chairman, announced that 10 modern roofed boats will be placed along 30 metres of Phase Two of Sungai Melaka. Once the cleaning and beautification work is completed, the boats will be transferred to the water taxi station near Taman Lagenda.

According to Razak, PPSPM is finalizing technical and concept work for the market and has already obtained technical approval from the relevant authorities for the site planning and design of the boats.

He stated, “PPSPM plans to offer 30 boats for the floating market, along with 60 business kiosks at the river banks and a floating restaurant. This new attraction aims to draw in tourists to the state.”

Razak also addressed PPSPM’s efforts to promote Sungai Melaka as an alternative transportation route. The water taxi service was launched by Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh on May 16.

Furthermore, during the state legislative assembly session, Datuk Rahmad Mariman, the Education, Higher Education and Religious Affairs Committee chairman, provided an update on bullying cases in Melaka schools.

From January to June of this year, there were 28 reported bullying cases involving 51 bullies. The punishments handed out included warnings, verbal warnings, school suspension, caning, and expulsion. These disciplinary actions were decided by the school principals based on investigations conducted by the school discipline board.

For cases involving fights or bullying in school that were reported to the police, discussions were held between the parties involved to mediate the matter. Expulsions were only imposed on individuals after certification by the school discipline board.

Efforts to curb bullying in schools include intervention, prevention, and enforcement programs. These programs consist of awareness campaigns, anti-bullying initiatives, guidance and counseling for students, and the creation of complaint boxes to facilitate the reporting of bullying incidents.

Razak emphasized the seriousness with which the state government views bullying, even stating that he has personally visited schools at night with members of a special task force to address the issue.
