Marriages in heaven often need a helping hand on earth, which is why the Penang Hindu Association (PHA) and Sri Meenakshi Sundaraeswarar Temple management are teaming up to organize the Suyamvaram 2.0 programme. The event, which will be held for the second consecutive year, aims to create opportunities for Hindu adults in Malaysia to meet and potentially get married. Taking place at the Sri Meenakshi Sundaraeswarar Temple in Jalan Kebun Bunga from 8.30am to 3pm on Sept 16, the programme is open to unmarried, divorced, widowed, and single parent individuals. Registration closes on Aug 31.
P. Murugiah, the president of PHA, expressed disappointment in the increasing number of unmarried Hindus in Malaysia. He attributed this to young adults prioritizing their careers and subsequently struggling to find a life partner due to their age. Additionally, some individuals lack the time and resources to search for a spouse. Over 80 people, aged between 25 and 61, have already applied to join the Suyamvaram 2.0 programme. While most applicants are from Penang, there are also individuals from other parts of Malaysia.
The Sri Meenakshi Sundaraeswarar Temple is offering a 50% discount on the rental of its wedding hall for successful applicants who wish to get married after the programme. In addition, there are special offers for B40 individuals (low-income group) and physically challenged applicants. Photos and basic profiles of the applicants will be displayed in the temple hall, where only participants can view them and select a potential partner. Non-participants are prohibited from accessing the display area or taking photos or notes of the profiles.
It is recommended for applicants to attend the event in person to interact with potential partners. Volunteers, including the police, will vet candidates to ensure safety, and the temple committee will verify the single status of applicants. Divorced individuals must present legal documents confirming their divorce. If a meeting does not yield a suitable match, applicants can explore other candidates multiple times during the programme.
The registration fee is RM100, but it is waived for B40 individuals and those who are physically challenged. Participants must bring their identity card and/or birth certificate, a numerology chart, and official divorce paperwork if applicable. Murugiah encourages more eligible men to participate as female applicants currently outnumber male applicants. For further details, interested individuals can contact Murugiah at 016-444 9246, V.
