Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has arrived in Egypt for a two-day working visit. He and his delegation arrived at the Cairo International Airport (Presidential Lounge) at 8.16pm local time (1.16am, Oct 23 – Malaysian time) on a special aircraft.
Anwar was accompanied by Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir. Upon arrival, he was greeted by Egypt’s Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Mohamed El-Quseir, Malaysia’s Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan, Malaysian Ambassador to Egypt Zamani Ismail, and other Malaysian officials in Cairo.
During his visit, Anwar will participate in a meet-and-greet session with the Malaysian diaspora and students in Egypt. He also has a scheduled audience with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi at the Al Ittihadiya Palace.
Prior to this visit, Anwar concluded his two-day working visit to Turkiye, where he had a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The leaders discussed various topics, including growing concerns about the Israel-Palestine issue.
Before that, Anwar completed a two-day working visit to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where he attended the Asean-Gulf Cooperation Council (Asean-GCC) Summit. This marked the first time the two regional blocs established relations since 1990.
Malaysia and Egypt have had diplomatic relations since November 10, 1959. Egypt is currently Malaysia’s third-largest trading partner in Africa, with a trade value of US$1.08 billion last year, reflecting a 24.8% increase compared to 2021.
This visit to Egypt is significant as it is Anwar’s first visit to the country and his first meeting with President El-Sisi since assuming office as Prime Minister in November of the previous year.
