Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for a united effort led by the United Nations to resolve global conflicts and humanitarian crises, citing Ukraine, Palestine, Afghanistan, and Myanmar as examples. He expressed concern over the polarization of the world and the negative impact on smaller nations in conflict regions.
In his address at the United Nations General Assembly, Anwar highlighted the geopolitical dilemma faced by many nations. He emphasized the need for multilateral dialogue and criticized the binary choices imposed by major powers.
Anwar underscored the urgency of peaceful resolution in the Ukraine-Russia conflict and urged all parties to return to the negotiating table. He emphasized the consequences of the conflict, including skyrocketing food prices and widespread hunger.
The Prime Minister also expressed deep concern over the ongoing conflict in Palestine, criticizing the politics of dispossession and the construction of illegal settlements. He called for international condemnation of human rights abuses in Palestine.
Anwar addressed the dire humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, particularly the impact of drought. While Malaysia remains committed to providing humanitarian aid, he called on Afghan authorities to reverse exclusionary policies against women and girls.
Turning to Myanmar, Anwar expressed horror at the continued violence and instability following the coup. He stressed the importance of international support, including from the United Nations, to pressure the military authorities to change their course.
Anwar also shared Malaysia’s efforts in addressing the climate crisis and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda. He emphasized Malaysia’s commitment to the Malaysia Madani framework and called attention to other global issues.
The Prime Minister’s appearance at the United Nations marked his first as head of state. The General Debate’s theme focused on rebuilding trust, global solidarity, and accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.
The session was chaired by Malaysia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Datuk Dr Ahmad Faisal Muhamad. Several Malaysian officials, including Anwar’s wife and key ministers, were also in attendance.
