PUTRAJAYA: On Friday (Dec 1), Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim became the first person in Malaysia to register with the National Digital Identity or Digital ID. The Digital ID is a digital means of identifying and verifying individuals, which will be beneficial for both the public and private sectors when conducting online transactions.
It is important to note that the Digital ID does not replace the MyKad system. However, it is a secure and trusted platform that facilitates online identity verification, aiming to prevent identity fraud during online transactions.
By registering with the Digital ID, Anwar, who also holds the position of Finance Minister, is expected to increase people’s confidence in the safety and transparency of the system.
Earlier, on Nov 21, Anwar had announced an immediate allocation of RM80mil to the research and development (R&D) agency, Mimos Bhd. This allocation aims to expedite the implementation of Digital ID, enhance digital transformation, and develop digital initiatives related to government transactions.
Additionally, Anwar stated that the Digital ID would be an initial step towards providing targeted subsidies and other facilities by both government departments and the private sector. – Bernama
