Pakatan Harapan’s victory in the Pulai and Simpang Jeram by-elections is seen as a positive development for the unity government, according to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the Prime Minister. He believes that this success will contribute to the government’s ability to achieve the people’s economic and development goals.
Anwar Ibrahim congratulated Suhaizan Kayat and Nazri Abdul Rahman for their respective wins in the Pulai parliamentary by-election and the Simpang Jeram state assembly seat. He also expressed his appreciation to the voters for their confidence in the unity government’s efforts in developing the country.
Amanah’s Suhaizan received a total of 48,283 votes in the Pulai by-election, defeating his opponent Zulkifli Jaafar from Perikatan Nasional, who obtained 29,642 votes. Meanwhile, Nazri from Amanah secured 13,844 votes in the Simpang Jeram by-election, surpassing his rival Dr Mohd Mazri Yahya from Perikatan, who garnered 10,330 votes.
Two Independent candidates, Samsudin Mohamad Fauzi and S. Jeganathan, received significantly fewer votes, with Samsudin getting 465 votes in Pulai and Jeganathan obtaining 311 votes in Simpang Jeram. As a result, both Independent candidates lost their deposits.
However, the voter turnout in these two by-elections was relatively low, with only 47.33% turnout in Pulai and 60.85% in Simpang Jeram. This is in contrast to the last general election, where Pulai had a turnout rate of 71%, and in the state polls, Simpang Jeram had a turnout rate of 53.4%.
