In Hamburg, the government is taking a careful approach in considering the offer to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that he will gather information and opinions from all relevant parties before reaching a final decision.
During his six-day visit to Germany, Anwar mentioned that he has requested details from Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, the National Sports Council, as well as other stakeholders. He emphasized the importance of examining the offer thoroughly before reaching a conclusion.
Anwar also mentioned that the Cabinet is set to discuss the offer during its meeting on Friday, with a decision expected to be made in the following week. He stressed the need for a prompt decision regarding the CGF’s proposal to have Malaysia host the Games following Victoria’s withdrawal as the initial host.
The CGF’s offer includes a fund injection of £100 million to Malaysia, which hosted the games previously in 1998. Anwar explained that Victoria decided to withdraw due to a significant increase in hosting costs, from an initial estimate of AUD2.6 billion to AUD7 billion.
While acknowledging that there are differing opinions on the offer, Anwar highlighted the importance of considering various perspectives. He emphasized the need to focus on supporting athletes and providing them with opportunities to excel in sports.
