JAKARTA: Malaysia’s commitment to collaborating closely with the United Nations and Asean in finding a peaceful resolution to the Myanmar issue was reiterated by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister expressed this commitment during his meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at the 43rd Asean Summit in Jakarta, Indonesia on Thursday (Sept 7).
Anwar highlighted that the discussions between both parties encompassed matters of mutual interest, including Asean-UN cooperation, Palestine, and Myanmar.
Prior to this, Guterres expressed deep concerns regarding the deteriorating political, humanitarian, and human rights situation in Myanmar, a country facing ongoing conflicts since a military coup in 2021. “I stress the urgency for the military authorities of Myanmar to heed the aspirations of its people, release all political prisoners, and facilitate a return to democratic governance,” he stated.
Malaysia also expressed similar concerns regarding the limited progress made in the five-point peace plan for Myanmar.
Anwar emphasized the importance of Myanmar fulfilling its responsibilities as an Asean member state and adhering to the provisions outlined in the group’s charter.
Later, Anwar is scheduled to attend the summit’s closing ceremony and witness the official transfer of the Asean chairmanship to Laos.
