In Kuala Lumpur, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has declared his commitment to protecting the independence of the judiciary. He addressed concerns regarding alleged executive interference in the judiciary, dismissing these claims as baseless rumors circulating on social media. Anwar emphasized that there is “not one iota of truth” in these accusations.
While acknowledging the existence of these disconcerting rumblings, Anwar clarified that they do not represent the majority sentiment. He reassured attendees at the 14th Asean Law Association General Assembly 2023 and Asean Law Conference that he has never encroached upon the judiciary’s autonomy and pledged to defend it unreservedly.
Among the distinguished guests present at the event were Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat and Singapore Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon.
Anwar stressed the importance of adhering to the rule of law and using governmental power strictly within legal bounds. Furthermore, he asserted that transparency is a crucial principle of open government, stating that the government must be held accountable for its decisions and actions.
The Prime Minister raised concerns about shady dealings and dubious decisions being concealed under the guise of the Official Secrets Act, emphasizing the need for greater transparency to prevent deception.
