Bukit Aman has revealed that a detainee in an Alor Setar lock-up died from pneumonia, ruling out any foul play in the death.
According to Bukit Aman’s Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS) director Comm Datuk Azri Ahmad, a post-mortem examination was carried out on the victim at Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah in Alor Setar, Kedah on Dec 17.
He emphasized that the examination did not uncover any signs of injuries from foul play.
“The cause of death has been confirmed as pneumonia. This death in custody has now been classified as ‘sudden death’,” he stated in a release on Monday (Dec 18).
Comm Azri further stated that the criminal investigation unit on deaths in custody (USJKT) will continue their investigations before handing over their findings to the coroner.
The victim, a 34-year-old woman, had been remanded at the Kuah police station on Dec 12 for drug-related offenses.
She complained of feeling unwell on the night of Dec 15 and was subsequently taken to Hospital Sultanah Maliha in Langkawi.
Tragically, she was declared dead by doctors at 7.30am the following day.
