KOTA KINABALU: A suspected syabu addict’s attempt to hide in some bushes for three hours to avoid a police blitz in a squatter area failed when police arrested him.
Policemen were on a major anti-crime operation dubbed Ops Sarang Bersepadu at the Kg Lembaga Padi squatter area in Inanam when eventually surrounded and nabbed by the suspect.
The suspect had initially fled from the housing area to hide on seeing the police, and tested positive for syabu after being caught during the five-hour operations at 4am Sunday (Aug 6).
Kota Kinabalu City police chief, Asst Comm Mohd Zaidi Abdullah said the suspect was among 11 people arrested in an operation carried out by the narcotics division.
“The integrated operation was aimed at arrested drug peddlers as well as addicts in the area,” he said.
“The operation also helps to create a safer environment for the community in the area where burglaries and other crimes also occur in their area,” he added.
He said the operations were carried out smoothly but they faced a challenge in combing through the squatter colony where the houses were unorganised and built in a haphazard manner.
“Our raiding team also faced a challenge as illegal electric wire connections were all over the place and could be dangerous to our personnel,” he added.
The operation included support from the police Air Wing, the Marine Police Force and the General Operations Force (GOF).
