Police in Sibu have detained five individuals in relation to a disturbance in a public area on Tuesday (Oct 24). According to Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Zulkipli Suhaili, a 71-year-old motorcyclist was fatally struck by a vehicle utilized by one set of suspects during a pursuit.
“We received information about an altercation in Lorong Wong King Hou at around 6.45am and upon reaching the scene, apprehended five men ranging from 17 to 30 years old,” explained ACP Zulkipli. He further revealed that two vehicles, two knives, and a rattan cane were confiscated during the arrest phase.
ACP Zulkipli also divulged that the dispute stemmed from monetary disagreements between the two factions, and he revealed that the urine tests conducted on all suspects yielded positive results for several substances, including methamphetamine and ketamine.
Under Section 148 of the Penal Code, the case is currently under investigation for rioting with weapons. If convicted, the perpetrators can face a maximum sentence of five years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.
Additionally, ACP Zulkipli indicated that the demise of the motorcyclist is being looked into under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
