KOTA KINABALU: Policeman Charged with Assaulting Girlfriend’s Sons
A policeman, Hazlisham Othman, was slapped with two charges for hurting his girlfriend’s two sons at the Magistrate’s Court in Kota Kinabalu on Tuesday (July 11). The incident is said to have occurred on May 1, 2021, at an apartment in Penampang at 7pm.
The court registrar, Rita Kunsoi, served as the magistrate for the case. Hazlisham did not enter a plea for the charges yet.
For the first charge, the 39-year-old corporal is accused of injuring a 19-year-old man under Section 323 of the Penal Code. If found guilty, he could face a maximum one-year jail term or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both.
Hazlisham was also charged with causing grievous hurt to an 18-year-old teenage boy, which falls under Section 325 of the Penal Code. If convicted, he could face a jail term of up to seven years, along with a fine.
The plea hearing is scheduled for July 18. Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik represented the prosecution and requested the court to set bail at RM1,000 with two local sureties for each count.
Hazlisham’s counsel, Dominic Chew, pleaded for a lower bail amount, arguing that the accused has no intention of fleeing and is still on duty. Chew also requested the court to consider one local surety for both charges since Hazlisham has two children to care for and is the sole breadwinner of his family.
The court eventually granted RM1,000 bail for each charge with one local surety, allowing Hazlisham to remain free until the case is resolved.
