KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian police have announced that they have identified the owner of an Instagram account that was used to sexually harass a female photographer. Asst Comm Mohamad Fakhrudin Abdul Hamid stated on Saturday (July 22) that the person of interest is a 37-year-old local man living in Shah Alam.
This identification came about after the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) reported the incident on July 20. According to the Petaling Jaya OCPD, the individual used both Instagram and Twitter to contact and harass the complainant, posting comments expressing his love for and sending vulgar messages to her, which caused her distress.
“After gathering information, the police have requested that the MCMC block the accounts in question to put a stop to these acts,” ACP Fakhrudin said in a statement on Saturday. He further revealed that investigations have revealed that the individual is currently receiving treatment at the neurology department of Kuala Lumpur Hospital, and that a full medical report will be obtained before compiling the investigation paper and forwarding it to the state deputy public prosecutor for further instructions.
ACP Fakhrudin also reminded the public to refrain from spreading or making statements on social media platforms that could disrupt the police investigation or give rise to speculation.
In 2018, the female photographer had lodged a police report regarding ongoing online sexual harassment. These details were reported by various media outlets. – Bernama
