Authorities in Kuala Lumpur apprehended 17 undocumented migrants and rescued two teenagers suspected of being victims of labor exploitation at a factory in Teluk Panglima Garang, Kuala Langat, Selangor.

The operation was carried out by the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Division’s Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act (Atipsom) 2007 Unit D3. SAC Soffian Santong, the principal assistant director, revealed that the two teenagers from Myanmar, aged 17, were rescued during the raid that took place at 12.45pm on Wednesday.

Of the 17 individuals detained, authorities identified them as originating from China, Myanmar, and Bangladesh.

Soffian disclosed that the factory, which lacked a valid business license, had been in operation for approximately 18 months. The workers were reportedly earning between RM1,200 to RM1,300 per month, working six days a week from 8am to 9pm under strict surveillance, with restrictions on leaving the premises.

The rescued teenagers and illegal immigrants will be held at the Kuala Langat police headquarters for further investigation, according to Soffian.

Authorities will be pursuing the case under various sections of the Atipsom Act 2007, Immigration Act 1959/63, and Immigration Regulations 1963, as per Bernama news agency.

Illegal labor exploitation remains a concerning issue, as vulnerable individuals continue to be subjected to harsh working conditions and human rights violations in various industries.

Efforts to combat human trafficking and migrant smuggling are essential to safeguarding the rights and well-being of individuals who may fall prey to such illegal practices.

Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or individuals involved in exploitative practices to prevent further incidents of labor exploitation and human rights abuses.
