KUALA LUMPUR: The police fired nine shots at the tyres of a vehicle ridden by two suspects who fled after being told to stop for an inspection in Kepong, but the two got away.
Earlier, a 13-second video showing police firing at a car in Jalan Kepong went viral on social media.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the incident occurred at 7.45am yesterday when a high-speed chase occurred between the police and the vehicle, from Pintasan Segambut through Taman Pusat Kepong and up to Laman Rimbunan, Jalan Kepong here.
“Three Sentul Motorcycle Patrol Unit (URB) personnel stumbled upon the two suspects in a car and instructed them to stop for an inspection.
“The suspects fled the scene and a 10-minute car chase ensued.
“Upon hitting some traffic congestion in Jalan Kepong, the driver reversed the car, hitting one of the URB personnel and damaging his motorcycle.
“The personnel sustained light injuries,” he told a press conference at the KL police headquarters yesterday.
The other two URB personnel fired nine shots at the suspects’ tyres, causing the car to swerve onto the side of the road, he added.
“Both suspects then fled on foot as the car was immobilized.
“We believe the suspects also damaged cars belonging to the public during the car chase,” he said.
Comm Mohd Shuhaily said the police are looking for O. Ganesan, 40, to assist with the investigation.
“We are in the process of identifying the suspects,” he said.
Police also discovered various items in the suspects’ car, Comm Mohd Shuhaily said.
“We are investigating to determine whether any of the items were stolen or used in criminal activities,” he said.
