The police in Kuala Lumpur will intensify their monitoring of heavy vehicles, particularly commercial vehicles, in the city starting from Thursday (Sept 21).

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Allaudeen Abdul Majid stated that this action is being taken after a fatal accident occurred on Wednesday (Sept 20) involving 14 vehicles at KM5.7 Jalan Persiaran Utara, heading towards Puchong in Putrajaya.

“While we inspect heavy vehicles daily in Kuala Lumpur, we will enhance our operations, particularly against commercial vehicles, in collaboration with the Road Transport Department (RTD), the Department of Environment, and Kuala Lumpur City Hall,” he said.

“In addition to the travel restrictions implemented on heavy vehicles in the city center from 6.30 am to 9.30 am, we will also focus on routes such as Putrajaya and vehicles coming from Puchong, Selangor.

“Where necessary, we will impound vehicles, and there will be no compromise,” he emphasized during a press conference on Phase Two of Op Hormat Undang-Undang Jalan Raya held on Thursday.

In the incident that took place at approximately 10.15 am, two motorcyclists lost their lives, and seven others were injured. Five individuals managed to escape unharmed after a sand-laden trailer collided with 13 vehicles that had stopped on the road during a training exercise conducted by the traffic police to identify the route for the Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) event.

The two deceased victims were identified as Faris Haziq Abu Bakar, a 25-year-old Pos Malaysia staff member, and Yuswar Mohd Uyus, a 39-year-old Ampang Court employee.

Allaudeen mentioned that negligence cannot be ruled out as a possible cause of the 14-vehicle crash.

Traffic obstruction was reported as the most frequent offense, with 27,755 summonses being issued.

“We also arrested 59 individuals for various criminal and traffic offenses. Additionally, we seized 27 motorcycles and two lorries,” he added.

Phase Two of Op Hormat Undang-Undang Jalan Raya began on September 15 and will continue for two weeks until September 29. – Bernama
