The upgrading and expansion of Pontian Hospital will receive an allocation of RM150 million, according to Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi. This announcement was made following the tabling of Budget 2023 by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who stated that Pontian Hospital is one of the hospitals in the country that will undergo enhancements. A preliminary budget of RM500,000 has already been allocated by the Federal Government for early works this year. Construction is expected to commence as early as next year.
Onn Hafiz delivered this statement after attending the state-level ‘Wave the Jalur Gemilang’ event at Pontian Municipal Council. In his speech, he revealed that Pontian Hospital will receive two new blocks that can accommodate a total of 150 beds. Additionally, plans have been put in place to upgrade the Pontian market, with the renovation set to begin next year. Onn Hafiz highlighted the poor condition of the current building during his visit and stated that he would work alongside Pontian MP and Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan to improve the market.
During his visit to the district, Onn Hafiz also inspected the ongoing upgrading works on the Sungai Pontian bridge. This project, which costs approximately RM23 million, aims to provide a better bridge for the people of Pontian as the current one is outdated and narrow. Onn Hafiz expressed hope that with collaboration from the Pontian Public Works Department, the project will be completed by next year.
