According to Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, the government, through the National Action Council on Cost of Living (Naccol), has decided to lower the retail price of imported white rice by RM2 to RM3 starting from Wednesday (March 20). The current price of imported white rice, which ranges from RM38 to RM45 per 10kg pack, is expected to decrease to RM35 as a result of this price adjustment finalized during the Naccol meeting on Tuesday (March 19).

Furthermore, Mohamad Sabu highlighted that this reduction in price is aimed at assisting Malaysians in managing their cost of living, particularly during the Ramadan month and upcoming festivals. In addition to lowering prices, the government has mandated the immediate processing and availability of 140,000 metric tons of current rice stocks purchased by millers to enhance rice distribution within local markets.

To facilitate the expanded distribution of imported white rice, the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) and the Farmers’ Organisation Authority (FAO) will be conducting more Agro Madani sales nationwide, and strict enforcement measures will be enforced across the country.

The government has also made a decision to utilize imported white rice for all government contracts, ensuring the full distribution of an extra 20,000 metric tons of imported white rice by April. These combined efforts are expected to increase the accessibility of rice to the Malaysian populace significantly.

Mohamad Sabu further stated that ongoing discussions with stakeholders will focus on refining a long-term action plan to establish a more sustainable rice production cost structure. This initiative aims to safeguard the welfare of rice farmers, boost national rice production, and ensure the viability of the rice industry in the long run.

The Minister emphasized that these measures underscore the Madani government’s firm commitment to safeguarding the welfare of its citizens and reinforcing the national food security agenda. By taking proactive steps to address the cost of living and boost rice availability, the government aims to enhance the overall food security of the nation.
