IPOH: The canteen operator of a primary school in Ipoh, where around 100 pupils suffered from food poisoning, is set to face charges in court.

Perak health committee chairman A. Sivanesan stated that legal action would be taken against the operator, as there was sufficient evidence to support prosecution.

“The canteen operator can be charged under Section 11 of the Food Act,” Sivanesan said during a press conference after visiting SK Chepor on Tuesday (Oct 1).

“We rarely pursue prosecution because we do not want to punish someone without justification, but this is a very serious case.”

Sivanesan emphasised the gravity of the incident, explaining that the case should go to court.

“We have enough evidence to prove the case in court. Let him present his defence there,” he added, saying that the operator had previously received two written warnings from the school administration.

The canteen operator has since been dismissed and would not be allowed to work at any other schools in Perak.

It was reported that on Wednesday (Sept 25), 101 pupils at SK Chepor fell ill due to food poisoning. While one pupil required hospitalisation, 62 others received outpatient treatment and the remaining students exhibited mild symptoms.

Sivanesan also issued a stern warning to other food establishments, stating that strict actions would be taken against those found to be operating under unsanitary conditions.

“If we take action against this canteen operator, it will send a strong message to everyone,” he said.

“I also warn restaurants in Perak: if cleanliness is not maintained, they will be shut down for 14 days. After that, don’t come and beg. This is a clear warning to all canteen operators and restaurants.”
