KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim encouraged student movements to utilize the government’s provided facilities and spaces to advocate for education, the people, and the country.
Anwar highlighted that the facilities and spaces available today are much better compared to when he led student movements in the past. He stated, “In the past, we had to search for indications and space to carry the voice of the people, but now we have scholars, ustaz, and lecturers as references. As such, let’s not complain or gossip, but instead utilize the available facilities to the best of our abilities in order to better defend the fate of the people.”
These remarks were made during Anwar’s address at a gathering of the Malaysia Madani community and students at Universiti Malaya, in conjunction with Perkampungan Menara Gading Kebangsaan 2023, on Saturday, July 22. The ceremony was organized by the National Association of Malaysian Muslim Students (PKPIM) and attended by Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.
Anwar, who served as PKPIM president from 1968 to 1972, further urged students involved in the association to continue the tradition of mastering scholarly publications. He emphasized that this privilege and uniqueness of the student movement should be upheld. Only those who have a strong foundation in knowledge are eligible to be spokesmen for the people.
Anwar also discussed his decision to host various knowledge-sharing events at Seri Perdana, the Prime Minister’s official residence in Putrajaya. Despite facing insults and accusations, Anwar remains committed to upholding and developing the teachings of Islam. He believes that by inviting renowned figures, both domestically and internationally, to Seri Perdana, he can improve the community’s understanding of Islam and other essential areas of knowledge.
“Why? The answer is because I have a responsibility to improve the quality of understanding about Islam in the community, and that is why I present various figures with various knowledge backgrounds,” Anwar explained. – Bernama
