KUALA TERENGGANU: The decision to acquire defence assets for the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), whether through leasing or purchasing, is guided by the priorities and financial management strategies of the Defence Ministry, says Adly Zahari.
The Deputy Defence Minister highlighted that purchasing defence assets typically demands a larger financial commitment compared to leasing.
“There are several segments of defence assets to consider. For combat and operational assets, we usually opt for purchase. However, logistical support assets may be considered for lease, depending on various factors,” he said when addressing inquiries about the government’s decision to lease defence assets such as helicopters for ATM use.
Adly made these remarks while officiating the ATM Veteran Entrepreneurs Empowerment Programme (PUVET ATM) at the state level in Terengganu on Saturday (Oct 19).
He emphasised that leasing decisions still align with the needs of the ministry as outlined in the Defence White Paper.
“What’s crucial is that we adhere to the White Paper framework, whether acquiring new technology through purchase or direct leasing. The ministry, along with the Economy Ministry and the Finance Ministry, continuously collaborates to enhance our priorities in safeguarding national territories and borders,” he added.
Regarding the RM21.2bil allocation for the ministry in Budget 2025, Adly noted that it would address national security and defence needs, as well as improve the welfare of staff and personnel.
“This budget includes maintenance for the Armed Forces Family Housing (RKAT), facilities at camps and ATM bases, and support for ATM veterans.
“The 7.08% increase from last year’s budget will benefit both active members and veterans,” he said.
Moreover, Adly said the ministry is in constant communication with the Malaysian Battalion (MalBatt 850-11) stationed in southern Lebanon to ensure the safety and status of the peacekeeping forces.
“We regularly receive reports from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil) to make informed decisions,” he said, adding that the Defence Minister has assured that personnel are safe. – Bernama
