KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Vietnam, as major trading partners, should closely collaborate to attract more investments in the ASEAN region, according to Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz.
Tengku Zafrul, in an interview with correspondents from the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) in Kuala Lumpur, stated that he will be accompanying the Prime Minister during his official visit to Vietnam on July 20 and 21, with the goal of promoting trade and investment ties.
With regard to trade, Malaysia ranks fourth among ASEAN countries for Vietnam, while also being its third-largest foreign direct investor. Tengku Zafrul emphasized the opportunity for the two nations to enhance their cooperation, especially in the trade of agricultural and aquatic goods.
Furthermore, Tengku Zafrul suggested that Malaysia and Vietnam should collaborate in the green and digital economies, where both countries are heavily investing. He also recommended exploring markets outside of ASEAN, including the halal market.
While emphasizing the importance of collaboration in the food and agriculture sectors, Tengku Zafrul noted the potential for partnerships in the cosmetics and healthcare industries. Representatives from the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) and the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) will join the delegation to Vietnam and hold working sessions with Vietnamese businesses targeting exports to Malaysia.
Tengku Zafrul also mentioned that his ministry will be hosting the Malaysia International Halal Showcase in September. He hoped that Vietnamese companies will perceive Malaysia as the global center for halal product exports. – Bernama/VNA
