He also emphasized the need to address this issue at the national level given Malaysia’s aging population. Syed Hussain believes it is crucial to understand why women, who are just as competent and even better qualified, choose to drop out of employment after getting married or having children, or when they need to care for their parents. He observed that they often do not return to work even after their children have grown up or their parents have passed away. He also acknowledged that private sector employers must continue to create better working conditions for women to attract and retain talent, especially considering that more than 90% of Malaysian employers are small to medium enterprises who may not be able to afford day care centres for elderly and childcare.
