PETALING JAYA: The Accountant-General’s Department has stated that unclaimed money can still be returned to owners even after the 15-year period has lapsed.
The department assured that the lapsed period will not have any effect on those wishing to claim their unclaimed money.
As of February 2024, there was RM15.4 billion in unclaimed money with RM3.8 billion already paid out, leaving the current total of unclaimed money at RM11.6 billion.
The department also issued a warning to the public, stating that the Finance Ministry has not appointed any third-party companies or agents to handle unclaimed money applications.
Individuals can check their status and claim any available funds through the eGumis portal or at any Accountant-General’s Department counter nationwide.
All unclaimed money, both by individuals and companies, is transferred to a Consolidated Trust Account where it remains for 15 years before being transferred to the Consolidated Revenue Account.
However, a proposal was made on March 11 to reduce the 15-year lapse period to 10 years.
