KOTA KINABALU: A one-month public campaign has been launched at the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park to name three adorable Bornean elephant calves. The “Baby Elephant Naming Campaign” is now accepting suggestions from the public through the park’s Facebook page until August 8, according to Lok Kawi Wildlife Park curator, Maryati Abdullah Lakim. She mentioned that everyone is welcome to participate, and the winning names will be announced a week after the campaign concludes.
Set to commemorate World Elephant Day 2023 on August 12, with the theme “Protecting elephant habitats for a sustainable tomorrow,” this campaign aims to engage the public in suggesting names for the three unnamed calves, as revealed by Maryati. “We have three calves – one born at the end of last year and two more this year. They have all not been named, so we are encouraging the public to suggest names for them,” she said.
Maryati further explained that involving the public is crucial as it fosters a sense of attachment and increases awareness about the importance of protecting Sabah’s wildlife. Additionally, the campaign aims to attract more people to follow the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park’s Facebook page, as it will be regularly updated with educational activities, conservation efforts, and awareness videos.
“Our ultimate goal is for the general public to assume responsibility in spreading the word about the significance and value of wildlife in Sabah,” she added, emphasizing the park’s desire to attract more visitors alongside raising awareness. The campaign is proudly sponsored by Borneo Behavior Solutions Sdn Bhd, as stated by its manager, Kenneth Maluda. He reassured that the company will continue supporting the Sabah Wildlife Department to ensure the success of every program implemented in the park.
