IPOH: The public has been cautioned against placing lit candles or kerosene lamps on street or traffic light posts as these actions can potentially harm the cables inside.
According to Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin, Perak’s infrastructure committee chairman, people often position these open flames on or near the posts for extended periods.
“The heat emitted by the candle or lamps can inflict damage to the cables inside,” he stated recommending the use of battery-powered lamps as a way to safeguard the cables.
The chairman made these remarks during a visit to the traffic light junction near Taman Sepakat on Wednesday (Aug 30), thereafter addressing the media.
Mohammad Nizar also revealed that repairs for streetlights along eight stretches of roads in the state are currently underway.
In June, an amount of approximately RM2.2mil was allocated to the state Public Works Department for this purpose.
“We anticipate the completion of this project by November,” he said, elaborating on the locations being addressed, such as Jelapang, Tronoh, and the road in front of MH Hotel.
The majority of the allocated funds will be utilized for replacing damaged cables,” he added.
“Should additional street lamps be required, we will seek additional funding.
“Moreover, if necessary, we will consider installing more road signs,” he concluded.
