In NILAI, the Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir has called for public universities to prioritize the maintenance of student hostels that have been neglected for over two decades.
He stressed the need for public university managements to closely monitor on-campus facilities, especially student accommodation, to ensure that students have comfortable living arrangements.
Zambry highlighted that some hostels have not been refurbished for more than 20 years, and it is the responsibility of the authorities to gather information on the condition of these old dormitories.
After visiting the Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) campus in Sarawak, he emphasized the importance of giving priority to student accommodation for a better living environment.
Speaking to reporters after a student dialogue session at the Higher Education Leadership Academy (AKEPT) in Bandar Baru Enstek, Zambry said that the event serves as a platform for student representatives to exchange ideas and perspectives, contributing to the development of visionary leaders.
During the session, the Minister announced an allocation of RM20,000 to the student representative councils (MPP) of 20 public higher education institutions (IPTA) and seven private higher education institutions (IPTS).
Zambry expressed his vision of seeing the student representatives evolving into leaders, with the potential of some becoming prime ministers or leading their respective states. – Bernama
