Seven media practitioners, including a photographer for The Star’s Johor bureau, took the opportunity to vote during the Pulai parliamentary by-election in Johor Baru on Saturday (Sept 9).
Thomas Yong, a 57-year-old photographer, said he cast his vote at SA Ibnu Khaldun Taman Perling 1 after completing his assignment. He had covered Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay’s press conference at the English College earlier in the day.
“So after that assignment was over, I rushed to the polling centre to vote,” he said, noting that the journey was less hectic than previous elections due to clear roads.
Yong, who has been a photographer since 1985, expressed his hope that the chosen Pulai MP would contribute to the country’s prosperity.
Other media practitioners from Media Prima – Farid Noh, Izlaily Hussein, and Nur Aisyah Mazalan – also cast their votes at different polling centres, namely SK Pengkalan Rinting, SA Bandar Johor Baru, and SK Taman Tampoi Indah.
For Nur Aisyah, this polling day held extra significance as she was celebrating her 35th birthday and seventh wedding anniversary with her husband, Firdaus Adnan. The photographer, who has 11 years of experience in the media industry, expressed her pride in exercising her rights as a citizen on her birthday.
In addition to the Media Prima personnel, three other media practitioners who voted were TV Sarawak cameraman Yahya Kiprawi, Bernama TV cameraman Mohd Fuad Hashim, and Johor Media Club president Mohd Fauzi Ishak.
