JOHOR BARU: Suhaizan Kayat, the Pakatan Harapan candidate for the Pulai parliamentary seat, is urging voters to arrive early at polling centers to avoid the forecasted wet weather in the later part of the day. He also expressed hope that the Election Commission’s target of achieving more than 70% voter turnout would be achieved.
The former Johor state speaker stated that he was informed by the police that the voting process in all streams in Pulai is proceeding well and that the traffic conditions are also favorable.
However, Suhaizan expressed concern about the weather. He indicated that the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has predicted heavy rain in the evening. Therefore, he urged all voters in Pulai to come out early to fulfill their civic duties without any hindrances.
After casting his vote at SK Seri Melati, Taman Melati, on Saturday (Sept 9), Suhaizan made these remarks. Accompanied by his wife, Dr. Norsham Idris, they arrived at the polling center at 8.50am and finished voting at 9.03am. Suhaizan then spent some time meeting and greeting voters at the polling center before leaving.
Suhaizan is competing against Perikatan Nasional Zulkifli Jaafar and independent candidate Samsudin Mohamad Fauzi in a three-cornered fight for the Pulai parliamentary seat.
According to Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh, the voter turnout for the Pulai parliamentary and Simpang Jeram state by-elections is expected to exceed 70%. This projection is based on the low voter turnout during the Aug 12 state elections. There are 166,653 registered voters in Pulai and 40,379 in Simpang Jeram.
The Pulai parliamentary constituency has 47 polling centers with 294 streams, while the Simpang Jeram state constituency has 14 centers with 68 streams. Both will be open from 8am until 6pm.
