In the Johor Baru constituency of Pulai, the voters had already made up their minds about who to support even before Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA), according to Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed.
Nur Jazlan, an Umno supreme council member and Pulai Umno chief, stated that Ahmad Zahid’s DNAA would not have any impact on the Chinese votes for Pakatan Harapan’s Pulai candidate, Suhaizan Kayat, as was the case with Lim Guan Eng’s acquittal on corruption charges in 2018.
He drew parallels between the two situations and pointed out that Lim’s acquittal did not lead to a decrease in Chinese votes for Pakatan, especially DAP, but rather there was a remarkable increase in the 15th General Election (GE15).
These comments were made in response to a statement by DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke, who called on the Attorney General to provide an explanation regarding the DNAA granted to Ahmad Zahid at the public prosecutor’s request.
Nur Jazlan advised Loke not to worry about the impact of the DNAA on Ahmad Zahid’s case on the votes for Suhaizan.
He recognized that Ahmad Zahid’s image had already been tarnished by the Opposition’s narrative, including Pakatan, ever since Umno and Barisan Nasional lost in GE14.
Thus, he believed that the voters in Pulai had already made up their minds before the High Court’s decision on the Zahid case was announced last Monday.
Nur Jazlan then urged Loke to increase his efforts to ensure that Chinese voters in Pulai turn out in large numbers to support Suhaizan’s victory.
He specifically called on Loke to deploy the DAP machinery to attract Chinese voters and motivate them to participate in the election.
