According to Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, squatters residing on Gaya Island in Kota Kinabalu have been asked to vacate the area in order to make way for beautification projects. The Chief Minister mentioned that the government has plans to enhance the island and transform it into a tourist destination, but this vision has been hindered by the presence of squatters.
Hajiji emphasized the importance of cleanliness and safety on the island, especially since there are resorts in the vicinity. He revealed that the exact number of squatters involved in the relocation process to the mainland and the timeline for this move have not been finalized yet.
“We have not determined the specific number of individuals who will be relocated to the mainland. Our objective is to eradicate squatter settlements and prioritize better living conditions,” stated Hajiji.
The initial plan is to construct Public Housing Program (PPR) homes in the Sepanggar area and subsequently transfer the local squatters there. However, the implementation of this plan is contingent upon the allocation of funds from the Federal Government.
Speaking at the Kembara Kasih Ramadan event at SK Pulau Gaya, Hajiji highlighted the historical significance of Pulau Gaya and its close proximity to the state capital, just a short boat ride away. He emphasized the need to utilize the island’s potential.
Additionally, the Putatan Parliament Office, led by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, is planning to establish a Health Clinic on the island to cater to the community’s healthcare needs.
Hajiji stressed the importance of maintaining unity, security, and cleanliness among the residents of Gaya Island. During the event, he, along with Petagas Assemblyman Datuk Awang Ahmad Sah Awang Sahari, distributed school fee assistance to 70 students.
Furthermore, Hajiji, Awang Ahmad Sah, Shahelmey, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk Ariffin Arif, and Yayasan Sabah Director Datuk Ghulam Haidar Bahadar Khan distributed Hari Raya contributions to the local community.
