KUALA SELANGOR: The Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah urges the Girl Guides Association of Malaysia to explore new business opportunities, specifically those involving recycled materials. In a bid to promote sustainability, the Royal Patron suggests repurposing plastic bottles into bags, cushions, and blankets. Her Majesty was inspired by her visit to the Chelsea Flower Show in England, where she witnessed beautiful displays of weaves and rugs made from recycled plastic bottles. This statement was made at the opening ceremony of the national-level Plastic Busters Beach-River-Park Clean Up programme at the Kuala Selangor Indoor Stadium on Saturday (July 8).
The programme saw the participation of approximately 1,000 individuals nationwide. Among the attendees were Tengku Permaisuri Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, who is also the Royal Patron of the Selangor Association, and Association president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail. Together, they emphasized the importance of today’s clean-up activity in raising awareness about environmental preservation and conservation.
Tunku Azizah highlighted the significance of caring for the environment, stating, “With all the money in the world, we cannot build a beach. If we destroy the beach, we cannot recreate it because it is nature that we must take care of.” She also emphasized the need to educate children about the environmental consequences of plastic waste and the proper use of recycling bins. The Queen hopes that through this programme, the sense of responsibility towards preserving the country’s waters and beaches will be instilled in all parties, including the government, private sector, and non-governmental organizations. The ultimate goal is to create a clean, cheerful, and safe environment for all.
This initiative is a testament to the Girl Guide Association’s commitment to sustainable practices and environmental conservation. By venturing into business opportunities involving recycled materials, they are not only promoting eco-consciousness but also contributing to the circular economy. With the support and guidance of Her Majesty, the Girl Guides Association of Malaysia is poised to make a positive impact on the environment while generating economic benefits.
