The government in Malaysia has set a target of vaccinating 40,000 pets in Sarawak this year to control the spread of rabies. Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Chan Foong Hin announced that as of September 7, a total of 27,668 pets in the state had already been vaccinated. He also revealed that since 2017, there have been 949 cases of rabies recorded in Sarawak, with 72 of these cases infecting humans and causing 65 deaths. These figures were shared during the World Rabies Day 2023 event, which had the theme ‘Rabies: All For One, One Health For All’, at the Kuala Lumpur Veterinary Hospital on October 1.

Chan added that preventive measures to combat the spread of rabies include urging pet owners to register for anti-rabies vaccination for their pets and to have them sterilized as well. He emphasized that since 2015, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, in collaboration with various ministries, departments, and agencies, has been diligently working to prevent, control, and eradicate rabies. The government’s ultimate objective is to completely eliminate rabies by 2030, and Chan stressed that all parties have a responsibility to contribute towards achieving this goal.
