KUALA LUMPUR: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry will provide subsidised prices for imported rice through the Rahmah Sale initiative.

The acting minister, Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, explained that this move aims to boost the sales and supply of rice during the event.

“We are also considering the provision of imported rice at subsidised rates to lower prices so that we are not solely reliant on local rice,” he said.

During the Rahmah Sale program, the supply of rice at subsidised rates will be increased, meaning that additional rice will be added each time the program is held,” he stated at a press conference after visiting two supermarkets in Selayang, on September 19.

Since August, the ministry has been conducting the Rahmah Sale program twice a month in 640 state constituencies across the country.

In the past, the initiative was implemented once a month in state constituencies and twice a month in parliamentary constituencies nationwide.

Regarding Ops Jamin, Armizan mentioned that a total of 6,141 inspections on various distribution chains were carried out nationwide between July 7 and September 18.

During the same period, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security received 175 complaints related to prices, supply, and rice-related issues.

“Based on our monitoring, the highest average price for imported white rice in the peninsula is RM40.65, while in Sarawak it is RM39.21, in Sabah RM37.09, and in Labuan RM37.83,” he stated.

Op Jamin was launched to tackle offenses of rice label tampering following the recent price adjustments involving imported white rice – Bernama.
