Prof Datuk Rahmat Mohamad will step down from his position as chairman of the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) on August 31, as announced by the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department.
The announcement follows Rahmat’s recent appointment as the chairman of the Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC) Advisory Board by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said on August 23.
The Legal Affairs Division stated that this appointment is in line with Rahmat’s expertise in International Law and his past experience as the fifth secretary-general of the Asian African Legal Consultative Organisation (AALCO).
In order to ensure a smooth transition within Suhakam’s governance, the government will appoint an interim chairman to fulfill the duties of the Suhakam chairman until a new chairman is appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, according to a statement from the Legal Affairs Division on Monday (August 28).
Rahmat was initially appointed as the Suhakam chairman for the term of 2022-2025.
