The Home Minister has criticized Perikatan Nasional’s decision to hold the “Save Malaysia” rally on Malaysia Day, stating that it displays a lack of respect for unity, tolerance, and love towards the people. Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail stated that the organizers could have chosen any other date for the event but instead chose September 16. He emphasized the significance of this day as the formation of Malaysia and the importance of mutual respect, tolerance, and adherence to the law. He expressed concern for the lack of respect for these values, particularly towards the people of Sabah and Sarawak.
As someone with 30 years of experience in politics, the Pakatan Harapan senator recounted his participation in street demonstrations. He noted that during those times, street rallies were regulated by the Police Act. However, since the implementation of the Peaceful Assembly Act in 2012, there are now guidelines prohibiting gatherings near places of worship, petrol stations, or electricity substations.
Saifuddin asserted that the police have made their stance clear and will enforce the law regarding the rally. He stressed the importance of abiding by the dos and dont’s outlined in the Peaceful Assembly Act.
Regarding the case of a Malaysian student arrested for suspected espionage in Norway, Saifuddin revealed that he had received a briefing from the Inspector-General of Police. He mentioned that they are still awaiting a complete report from the Norwegian authorities, who have already informed them about the suspect’s status, background, and certain evidence obtained.
