The High Court in Kuala Lumpur has ruled that former Penang Deputy Chief Minister II, P. Ramasamy, must pay over RM1 million in damages for defaming Dr Zakir Naik, an independent preacher. The decision was made by Judge Hayatul Akmal Abdul Aziz on November 3 after she allowed two lawsuits filed by Zakir. In addition to the damages, the judge ordered Ramasamy to make the payment to Zakir within 30 days from the ruling date. The lawsuits were filed separately in October and December 2019. During the court proceedings, Ramasamy was physically present, while Zakir participated online as he was in Nigeria for a talk.
