Ranau experienced a minor earthquake with a magnitude of 3.7 on the Richter scale on Thursday, August 31. Fortunately, no untoward incidents were reported. Ranau Fire and Rescue Station chief Ridwan Mohd Taib confirmed that they did not receive any emergency calls from the public following the tremors. The buildings in Ranau were inspected and found to be in good condition.
Chief Ridwan advises the public to remain calm and report any emergency incidents to the authorities. According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department, the minor earthquake occurred at 7.13am with its epicentre located at 6.1° North and 116.6° East, at a depth of 5km, approximately 13km northwest of Ranau.
Rozita Jamrin, a 29-year-old teacher, shared her experience during the earthquake. She and her family were preparing to leave their homestay in Bundu Tuhan when they felt the tremors. Initially, Rozita thought her children were playing around by shaking the furniture, but they soon realized it was an earthquake. The family immediately left the room. The staff at the homestay assured them that it was a minor earthquake, and they were safe.
The incident serves as a reminder for the public to stay informed and prepared for such occurrences. It is important to follow safety guidelines, report emergencies promptly, and remain calm during earthquakes or any natural disasters.
