PETALING JAYA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed’s claim of a potential RM500bil investment in Langkawi has caught the attention of Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, the Investment, Trade and Industry Minister. In a recent video on his social media, Tengku Zafrul expressed his willingness to welcome the investor with grand gestures, stating, “If it’s true that there is an investor who is looking to invest RM500bil in Langkawi alone, it would be a new record for Malaysia. As the minister in charge of investment, if this investor is real, we will follow up and facilitate. We will roll out a red carpet to welcome this RM500bil investor, from the airport to the hotel.”

Dr Mahathir claimed in an interview with Malay-language daily Sinar Harian on Saturday that an investor was interested in pouring RM500bil into the development of Langkawi, Kedah’s tourism sector. However, the daily later corrected the figure, stating that it was actually RM500mil.

Tengku Zafrul highlighted that Malaysia has never achieved an investment of RM500bil, even during Dr Mahathir’s time as prime minister. He added that the highest amount of annual investments the country has ever seen is RM309bil, and even that was from multiple sources rather than a single investor.

The Investment, Trade and Industry Minister concluded by stating that if the claim made by Dr Mahathir is true, then the RM500bil investment would set a new record for Malaysia. Tengku Zafrul assured that his ministry would actively follow up and assist the investor if they are genuine, promising a grand welcome with the red carpet treatment.
