PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Jamal Md Yunos (pic) has announced the cancellation of the planned “Red Shirts” gathering in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday (Sept 16). According to the head of the Sungai Besar Umno division, the decision was made because Perikatan Nasional Youth chose to move their gathering to Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur. Jamal explained that they had initially planned to gather after Perikatan Youth declared their presence at either the Sogo shopping centre or Bukit Bintang. However, with the change in venue, they have decided not to hold the gathering.
Originally, Perikatan Youth intended to hold the gathering as a protest against the Attorney General’s decision to drop charges against Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in the Yayasan Akalbudi graft case. However, the theme was later modified to a “Save Malaysia” rally. The location of the gathering was initially set to be in front of Sogo but it was then moved to Kampung Baru after Zohor prayers at the Kampung Baru mosque. As of Thursday night (Sept 14), it was unclear whether the organizers had received permission to hold the gathering.
Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain, the director of Bukit Aman CID, stated that the organizers’ original application did not fully comply with the provisions of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
