PUTRAJAYA: Retain and reflect Malay heritage in Padang Merdeka, Sultan Abdul Samad building, National Mosque and Carcosa Seri Negara when developing these places, reminds Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said that the development of the Sultan Abdul Samad building and its surrounding areas must retain their unique characteristics with concepts of Malay heritage.

“We do not want Kuala Lumpur to be a concrete jungle.

“The Sultan Abdul Samad building and the stretch will be turned into a heritage area.

“Although there are contributions of other races, the Malay heritage concept must be obvious in the development of the whole corridor at the Sultan Abdul Samad building and its surroundings.

“This is what we call Bumiputra economic transformation,” he said when launching the Bumiputra Economic Transformation Plan 2035 (PuTERA35) at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) on Monday (Aug 18).

PuTERA35 is supported by three core areas, 12 drivers, and 132 more comprehensive initiatives in advancing Bumiputera development.

Anwar said that he wanted to see a clean Kuala Lumpur with the development that will benefit all sectors.

“The development of the Bumiputra must not involve only those big corporations or companies.

“We must also focus on the small stalls and warungs and they need to be clean.

“This is because more than 80% of people will visit these places while the five-star hotels will only be visited by the remaining 15% or more,” said Anwar.

“But it is unfortunate that we overlook those places that are visited by more than 80% of the people,” he said.

He added that the transformation of Kuala Lumpur must benefit the general public and not only certain segments of the community.
