KUALA LUMPUR: Recent reports indicate that the remaining raw water storage reserves in several dams in Johor, Penang, and Kedah have decreased to critical levels due to the ongoing hot weather conditions. As of yesterday, the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) highlighted the situation, pointing out specific dams that are affected.

The West Sembrong Dam in Johor is currently at a level of 31.65 per cent, while the Air Itam Dam in Penang is at 35 per cent. The BS Padang Saga Dam in Kedah and Malut Dam in Kedah are also facing critical levels, with reserves at 39.67 per cent and 39.90 per cent respectively.

Nadma, in collaboration with the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) and Drainage and Irrigation Department (JPS), has reported that the Muda Dam in Kedah is at a warning level of 41 per cent.

Furthermore, Nadma revealed that three more dams are currently at alert levels. These include the Timah Tasoh Dam in Perlis (56.25 per cent), Bekok Dam in Johor (68.58 per cent), and Teluk Bahang Dam in Penang (69 per cent).

In addition to the dam levels, on March 25, JPS issued a drought forecast for three river basins: Sungai Muda in Kedah, Sungai Kelantan, and Sungai Melaka. This forecast may lead to water supply disruption in various districts, including Sik in Kedah, Pasir Mas, Machang, Tanah Merah, and Kota Baru in Kelantan, as well as Alor Gajah in Melaka.

As for the hot weather status, Nadma mentioned a Level-2 hot weather warning in several areas. This warning was in effect in Perlis from March 25 to 27, Hulu Perak district in Perak from March 26 to 27, Kota Setar district and Pokok Sena in Kedah on March 27, and the Beaufort district in Sabah on March 25.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department has indicated that the transitional monsoon phase is expected to commence on March 29 and last until May, marking the conclusion of the Northeast Monsoon for 2023/24.

As the monsoon transition phase begins, it is anticipated that the prevailing hot and dry weather conditions across the nation will gradually improve by mid-April. – Bernama
