PETALING JAYA: Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali, the Johor vice chairman of the Democratic Action Party (DAP), responded to Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman’s recent criticism by stating that calling DAP a “lapdog” signifies his forgetfulness of the party’s loyalty and support. Syed Saddiq has been voicing his disapproval following the discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) granted to Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in the Yayasan Akalbudi graft trial. Nga Kor Ming, the DAP vice-chairman, advised Syed Saddiq to privately address his concerns with the leadership of the unity government instead of making public statements. Consequently, on the same day, Syed Saddiq referred to DAP as a “lapdog” of Ahmad Zahid. In response, Sheikh Umar, who is also a member of the DAP central executive committee, expressed his disappointment with Syed Saddiq’s remarks in a statement released on Friday.
Sheikh Umar stated that Syed Saddiq’s comments were excessive and emphasized that Nga’s statement was neutral. He accused the Muda president of displaying ego in his response. Sheikh Umar reminded Syed Saddiq of DAP’s contributions and collaboration with Muda during both favorable and unfavorable situations, particularly during last year’s Johor state polls. He further added that Syed Saddiq should refrain from making accusations against DAP, and clarified that Nga’s remarks were simply requesting Muda to approach matters reasonably.
Sheikh Umar asserted that as a Member of Parliament supporting the unity government, Syed Saddiq should have utilized appropriate channels to voice his grievances instead of resorting to public attacks. On Thursday, Syed Saddiq took to a social media platform to highlight Nga’s past accusation of Ahmad Zahid’s corruption and labeled him as hypocritical, power-hungry, and devoid of principles.
