    Renowned art educator Prof Chung Chen Sun passes away at 89

    KUALA LUMPUR: Prof Chung Chen Sun, the founder of the Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA) and a renowned master in Chinese ink painting and calligraphy, passed away around 1pm on Monday (Feb 26), as reported by Chinese newspapers.

    Chung, who was born in Melaka in 1935, completed his education at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore.

    In 1967, he established MIA and served as its principal for 30 years, leading the institution to become one of the largest in the region for art and creative studies.

    Recognized as the Father of Contemporary Art Education, Chung played a key role in international art education initiatives and founded the International Contemporary Ink Painting Association to promote this art form.

    Throughout his career, he held various leadership positions, including co-chairman of the Asia Pacific Art Education Association, chairman of the International Association of Art’s Malaysia branch, committee member of the China National Academy of Painting, and president of the Malaysian Chinese Cultural Society.

    His artworks have been showcased in numerous countries across Asia, as well as in India, Japan, South Korea, France, Germany, Brazil, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
