The repair of the Tenom Pangi Hydro Power Plant, which was temporarily closed due to landslides and mud floods last year, has cost RM60 million so far, according to Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd CEO Mohd Yaakob Jaafar.
Utility company officials faced numerous challenges during the restoration process, but the station is expected to resume operations in March.
The electric dam on the Padas River has three 22MW turbines, all of which were rendered non-functional by the natural disaster on October 31, 2022, causing SESB to lose 66MW of power generation capacity.
In a statement, Mohd Yaakob said that repair works are actively underway, with the first turbine scheduled for completion in March, the second in June, and the third in September.
He also noted that cleanup efforts on the hydro water tunnel, which will allow water from the Padas River to be channeled through the tunnel and rotated to the Unit 3 turbine, are ongoing with the help of SESB personnel and an appointed contractor.
