PETALING JAYA: Star Media Group Bhd, which publishes The Star print products and online portal, is addressing the issue of a Facebook Page misusing The Star’s brand identity.

The group has discovered that a Facebook page named “The Star Finance Stock”, currently with 191 followers, is running multiple misleading advertisements on the Meta social platform.

The ads, sponsored by an advertiser pretending to be “The Star Finance Stock”, make false claims about offering stock products, stock diagnosis tips, and strategies for avoiding legal trouble.

Calling itself “Dividends from investing in Malaysian blue chips”, the advertisement wrongly utilizes The Star’s previous print masthead to invite individuals to join its stock exchange group for supposedly free benefits.

The latest version of the fraudulent ad also includes logos of well-known financial institutions and an energy group in an attempt to deceive the public.

The group wants to make it clear that the fake “The Star Finance Stock” Facebook Page is in no way associated with The Star’s official social media platforms, and the dubious advertisements promising “free stock market insider information” are not endorsed by The Star’s official Facebook page.

It is advised not to engage with these scam Facebook pages or suspicious advertisements, or join the groups they promote to the public.

The Star, recognized by Reuters as one of Malaysia’s most trusted news sources, publishes its official articles on thestar.com.my.

To ensure the authenticity of an article published by The Star, always verify that the web page address begins with https://www.thestar.com.my/.

If you encounter fake Facebook ads or suspicious Facebook pages impersonating The Star or other brands, take the following steps:

First, click the ellipsis (…) symbol on the top right of the ad or page, and select the exclamation point symbol to “Find support or report”.

A popup window will appear with the option “Find support or report Page: Help us understand what’s happening.”

Select the “Pretending to be something” option, then choose “A business”.

In the next pop-up window, enter “The Star” or paste The Star’s official Facebook Page URL (https://www.facebook.com/TheStarOnline), select The Star from the dropdown menu, and submit your report.

This will notify Meta about fraudsters impersonating The Star’s official online presence on its social media platforms and help create a safer online environment.
