PETALING JAYA: CTOS, a private credit reporting agency, has revealed that in the last three years, it has identified 335,000 pieces of personally identifiable information on the dark web belonging to over 58,000 Malaysian consumers. This information includes credit card and debit card details, passport information, email addresses, and phone numbers, the company announced in a statement on Dec 21.
CTOS stated that since 2021, its dark web monitoring service has scanned over 1.4 billion data breach records to uncover leaked personal information. With the digital economy playing a significant role in Malaysia’s economic growth, the company believes that consumers are increasingly exposed to data threats as they engage in online transactions.
The company also highlighted that in the past year, Malaysia has witnessed several major data breaches in the telecommunication, broadcasting, banking, aviation, and ecommerce sectors, impacting millions of customers.
CTOS emphasized the importance of taking necessary precautions to protect both individuals and businesses from falling victim to cybercrimes.
